City of water

Today we're going to the north-east of Italy, to the city of Venice. Every day, 60,000 people visit this “city of water”.

Venice is a group of islands: 118 islands. It has streets of water, called canals. There are 177 canals here, and no cars. People here walk and travel by boat. These people are riding in special Venetian boats called gondolas. These boats can go everywhere because they're very narrow.

It's winter in Venice now. It's cold, rainy and foggy. So why are there thousands of people here, in February? Because they're going to Venice's big festival: Carnevale!

The first carnevale in Venice was in 1162. It was a religious festival, but now it's just a big party. People wear colourful clothes and masks. These mysterious masks hide their faces. Who are these people? No one really knows.

This is Venice at night. This is Alessandro. And this is Antonia.

Antonia is going to a party for Carnevale. The party is huge. There are 500 people! These parties are very special. They are a Venetian tradition.

Alaska

This ... is where I'm going on my next holiday. Maybe you're thinking You're going there? On holiday? You're visiting that cold place with all that ice and snow, for fun? Where's the beach? Where's the sunshine? Where are the hotels and the restaurants?

Well, to me, this cold place, Alaska, is the perfect place. And I'll tell you why! Alaska is next to Canada, but it's actually part of the United States. It is the biggest state in the USA.

Alaska has some incredible landscapes. And a very good way to see them is from the sky! When I go to Alaska, I'm going to parachute over glaciers! You know, those big mountains of ice that move very, very slowly. It's a beautiful ride in the sky but a bit dangerous. Glaciers have a lot of holes, so it's not easy to land.

“Yeah!”

But I can't wait to try it! I'm going to ski, too. Skiing in Alaska is great! You can go so fast down the mountains there. Isn't it amazing?

I'm also going to try this! The water is very cold, but kayaking on those rivers is so exciting! You must be very strong and fast to go kayaking here.

At night, I'll camp and I'll see the Northern Lights if I'm lucky. Look! Aren't they spectacular?

So, you see? There'll be so much to do in Alaska but you must love being outside in the ice, snow and cold.

Where do you like going on holiday?

EMILY: On holiday, I like going to the seaside because it's fun and hot and I like going in the water.

RACHEL: I like going to Turkey because it's warm and you can go scuba diving.

FREDDIE: In the summer, I like going to the Caribbean on holiday. I love beaches, and I love swimming. But in the winter, I like staying at home.

STEVEN: On vacation, I like going to Florida. I love the warm weather, and I like snorkelling with all the colourful fish.

PETRA: I like going on vacation to Barbados with my mother. I like going there because it's an island, it's really beautiful, and my grandmother lives there.

EVAN: Well, for vacation, I usually like to go up to Vermont and hang out with my friends and family. In Vermont we usually snowboard, ski, drink hot cocoa, stuff like that.

COURTNEY: I like going to my cousins' house on vacation. We go biking and play outside.

BINNY: I like going to Ireland on holiday. My uncle lives there. He's got a really nice house near a lake. Sometimes we go fishing in the lake.

Holiday in Australia

A: Hey, Alex. What are you doing?

B: Oh, hey, Tina. I'm just looking at some videos to get ideas for our holiday next month.

A: Find anything good?

B: Yeah, I think you'll like this!

A: Ugh, yuck!

B: Yuck? It's brilliant! A lot of people take boat rides to see saltwater crocodiles in Australia. It looks great.

A: Great? It looks scary to me! I don't want to see dangerous animals! Why don't we go to the beach?

B: We're going to two places with beaches, Sydney and the Great Barrier Reef.

A: Now that sounds cool! What about the weather?

B: Here. Look at this frequency table. It shows the daily temperature in Sydney during the month of December last year.

A: It was more than 30 degrees on six days. That's very warm!

B: Yes, but look at the temperature the other 25 days. 21, 22 ... and under 30 degrees. Compare that to the Great Barrier Reef.

A: Wow! Last December, the temperature was more than 30 degrees every day at the Great Barrier Reef!

B: That's right. For 19 days, the temperature was 32 degrees.

A: That's really hot!

B: Yes, it is!

A: Will we go swimming and scuba diving?

B: Of course!

A: I can't wait to see all of those fish and coral reefs!

B: I know. It's so bright and colourful.

A: Are those whales?

B: Yes.

A: Will we see those too?

B: No, I don't think so. They only visit the reef in the winter. Remember, we'll be there in the summer.

A: Oh, that's right. Australia has opposite seasons from us.

B: Look. Here's a list of different things we can do at the beach.

A: Wow! More than 2 million tourists feed the fish in Australia every year. What's that like?

B: I found this great video of it.

A: That looks amazing! Will we do that too?

B: I hope so! I'm going to take my mask and flippers. Listen to these tourists.

Adventure!

CHLOE: I’m going to go on an adventure holiday in Scotland for a week this summer. I’m going to stay in a cabin in the Scottish countryside. There are about 50 different activities: from mountain biking to kayaking in Scottish rivers. My favourite activity is the zip wire. I’m not going to take summer clothes because it’s usually quite cold in Scotland, but I don’t mind! I can’t wait.

CARLA: This summer my family and I are going to explore Thailand. We’re going to stay in a tree house in the jungle for three days, where we’re going to ride elephants. Then we’re going to stay in a hotel near the beach for a week. I’m going to swim every day, and we’re all going to eat really nice food.Fantastic!

EMRE: I am going to spend two weeks watching birds and wildlife in Patara this summer with my friends and teachers. We’re going to stay in a hostel because hostels are really cheap. Patara is a beautiful place near Kalkan in the south of Turkey with lots of interesting animals and birds. There is a very long beach and loggerhead turtles, Caretta caretta, breed on it. We are going to visit historical places, too. I’m going to take my camera, of course, but we aren’t going to take our phones. When I get back, my dad’s going to build a web page and I’m going to put the best photos on it.

Summer camp!

In the USA there is a tradition of sending teenagers to summer camps while the parents stay at home. Every year over 11 million children and teenagers go to one of these. They are very popular because there are a lot of fun activities to do. They usually last two or three weeks. There are a lot of different kinds of camps. Here are some examples. Which do you like best?

Alaskan adventure camp

Our two-week camp is a perfect introduction to the "Land of the Midnight Sun". You'll go sea kayaking, sailing, snowboarding and camping, and you'll learn about the history of the region and the animals that live here.

Florida summer band camp

Join other musicians for two weeks of musical fun. You'll improve your skills during the day in classes with great teachers. Then, every evening, you'll relax at a special concert or at a party on the beach. Other activities are sports, board games and drama.

Tech camp Colorado

Learn new skills this summer at the University of Colorado – web design, game design; everything you want to know about computers. You'll stay in university rooms and use the amazing technology that our students use.

Super summer sports camp

A camp for everyone from great athletes to complete beginners. We train hard every day, and at night you'll be very tired! But you'll have fun, and play lots of new sports for the first time. You'll sleep well in our luxury cabins in the beautiful mountains of Virginia.

Riding camp

Do you love horses? Do you know how to ride? This is the summer camp for you. You'll get your own horse for the two-week course and you'll learn all about how to take care of it. At the end of this holiday you'll be an excellent horse rider and you won't want to leave!

FERNANDO: But … no, it isn't. The idea is you go out and do things you don't usually have time to do.

MARK: For example?

FERNANDO: Well, we're lucky. We live by the sea but also near the mountains. It's a fantastic place for a staycation! So my parents, my brother and I made a list of the places we wanted to visit. We started our ‘staycation' a few days ago. We go out every day. The only difference is at night we go home.

MARK: Right! So, what are you going to do tomorrow?

FERNANDO: Let's see. It's day three of our ‘staycation' holiday. We're going to get up early and go for a walk on the beach tomorrow. Then we're going to visit the Maritime Museum – my dad says it's amazing! After that, we're going to have lunch at a beach restaurant, and go to the beach to relax and swim.

My name's Dan, and I love going to our town museum and seeing all the ancient things that people found. It's amazing to think that the people who lived in our town used those things! Some of them are really beautiful. There's an old chess set there. I'd really like to have that!

I'm Lucy, and I want to be a vet when I leave school. So my favourite place is the zoo. It's expensive, so I don't go very often, but I love it, especially the monkeys, elephants and tigers. I spend hours looking at them. I know some of them now, and they're really funny!
