Olivia: I don't believe it. I've lost my necklace.

Teacher: Ryan?

Ryan: Sure. I think it's Martin Luther King Junior.

Teacher: Yes, that's right. Does anybody know what problems he faced? Anybody know what problems he faced? Olivia? … Olivia?

Olivia: Erm… all I know is that he needs help.

Teacher: What's going on, Olivia? I don't understand.

Olivia: I know. I'm sorry.

Ryan: Stop it. Olivia, Megan, Luke and I saw a man in the park today. He's homeless, a poor guy. Olivia's feeling sorry for the man, and I am too.

Teacher: OK. Tell us what you saw.

Scene 2

Boy 1: How about asking our parents for money?

Ryan: I don't think that's a good idea. Why don't we try to help him?

Girl 1: We could all give him our school lunch.

Megan: I'm not so sure. What's he going to do with so much food?

Olivia: Good point. But we could take him something after school.

Luke: Yeah, but he's homeless, and that's the biggest problem, I guess. But I've got an idea. Our neighbour works for a charity. They look after homeless people. We could talk to her to find out what we can do.

Girl 2: Yeah, let's do that.

Teacher: I agree. I think that's an excellent idea.

Olivia: Why don't we call her to find out what we can do?

Teacher: Well, as you know there is one strict rule – no phones during class, but in this case I think it would be a good idea to call her. Have you got her number, Luke?

Luke: I'm just looking it up on my phone. Here it is!

Scene 3

Luke: Oh, here we are, Mrs Cromer.

Mrs Cromer: Hello, everyone. Thanks for calling me. It's really important that I talk to this guy. We need to look into why he's homeless and see what we can do to help him.

Megan: I saw him five minutes ago. He was over there, on that bench behind those bushes.

Mrs Cromer: Let's look for him.

The LEGO® House

A few years ago in August, there was a very long queue of people in the countryside near London, in England. Some people started queuing at 4.30 in the morning. Why were they there? They wanted to help James May, a TV presenter, to build a house. But this was not an ordinary house. No, this was a LEGO house.

Together, 1,200 people used 3.3 million (yes, 3,300,000) LEGO toy bricks to make a real house.

It was part of a TV show called Toy Stories. In the programmes, James May used traditional toys to make 'real' things. Why LEGO? Well, because when he was young, James May loved LEGO and played with it all the time.

The people finished building the house on 17 September, almost seven weeks after they started. Everything was LEGO. All the walls, doors and windows were LEGO®. There was a LEGO bedroom and a LEGO bed. There was a LEGO bathroom with a LEGO toilet and a shower – and they worked! In the kitchen there was a LEGO fridge (but no cooker) and there were LEGO tables and chairs. There was even a LEGO cat. James May stayed in the house one night and was surprised because the bed was quite comfortable.

At first, a theme park called LEGOLAND planned to buy the house, but later they decided not to. James May tried to find another buyer. He started a Facebook page and asked other people to buy it, but nobody wanted it. So on 22 September, they started to take the house to pieces. A few days later, there wasn't a LEGO house any more.

James May was not happy about it as more than 1,000 people worked hard to build the house and everything inside it. Other people were not so sad. The television company donated the three million LEGO pieces to a charity for children.

Day five of the Italian adventure and we're in Naples. We arrived here early yesterday morning, but as usual we were only at the hotel for about five minutes before Dad wanted to take us somewhere. This time it was to the ancient city of Pompeii near Naples. I didn't really want to go. I wanted to go shopping for shoes.

We travelled there by train. The journey didn't take long – but long enough for Dad to tell us a bit about the history. Many years ago, Pompeii was a large Italian city near a volcano called Mount Vesuvius – then on 24 August 79 CE – the volcano erupted and completely covered the city in ash. It killed about 20,000 people. But the ash didn't destroy the buildings and now, 2,000 years later, you can walk around the city and see how people lived all those years ago.

2,000-year-old houses: thanks, Dad – really boring, I thought, but I was wrong! The houses were very interesting. Most of them were really big with lots of rooms (so lots of space to get away from annoying brothers and sisters!) There were paintings and mosaics all over the walls. I'd love a Roman mosaic of One Direction on my bedroom wall. Also, I was amazed at the bathrooms. I'd love a big bathroom in our house – ours is so small!

I got really interested in Pompeii. I wasn't bored at all. In fact, I've got lots of ideas for our house when we get home!

The LEGO® House

Together, 1,200 people used 3.3 million (yes, 3,300,000) LEGO® toy bricks to make a real house.

It was part of a TV show called Toy Stories. In the programmes, James May used traditional toys to make 'real' things. Why LEGO®? Well, because when he was young, James May loved LEGO® and played with it all the time.

The people finished building the house on 17 September, almost seven weeks after they started. Everything was LEGO®. All the walls, doors and windows were LEGO®. There was a LEGO® bedroom and a LEGO® bed. There was a LEGO® bathroom with a LEGO® toilet and a shower – and they worked! In the kitchen there was a LEGO® fridge (but no cooker) and there were LEGO® tables and chairs. There was even a LEGO® cat. James May stayed in the house one night and was surprised because the bed was quite comfortable.

For example, there's a house that looks like a strawberry in Japan, another one that looks like a mushroom in Ohio, USA, and there's a toilet-shaped house in South Korea. There's even a house in Poland that is completely upside down!

Maybe you know the children's poem about the old lady who lived in a shoe. In Pennsylvania, USA there is a real shoe house. Of course, it's not really a shoe, just a house in the shape of a shoe. A local shoe manufacturer called Mahlon N. Haines had the idea of building it. He used it as a guesthouse. When he died it became an ice cream shop for a while. These days, it's a museum.

The One Log House in Garberville, California, USA is a one-bedroom house inside the trunk of a 2,000-year-old giant redwood tree. It took two people seven months to remove all the inside of the tree and make a living space that is just over two metres high and nearly 10 metres long.

Joanne Ussary from Benoit, Mississippi in the USA lives in a plane. It's a Boeing 727, without the wings. The plane cost $2,000 and it cost another $4,000 to move it on to her land. She spent another $24,000 making it into a home. It's not the only 'flying' home in the USA. In Chattanooga there is a house in the shape of a spaceship; a round white disc with four legs.

And believe it or not, there is a walking house in Denmark. It's a hexagonal tube supported by six metal legs. It can move over most surfaces. It is a collaboration between Danish artists and scientists. Moving home couldn't be any easier. When you want to live somewhere new, just push a button and walk your house to a new location.
