RICHIE: I’ll be with you in a minute.

FLORA: OK.

RICHIE: Now then. How can I help? Oh, hey.

FLORA: Oh hi, Richie. I didn’t know you worked here.

RICHIE: Yeah, I work here at the weekends.

FLORA: Cool.

RICHIE: Yeah, it’s really great. I love working with computers anyway and here I’m getting paid for doing it. It couldn’t be better.

FLORA: Lucky you. I keep thinking I should get a Saturday job.

RICHIE: Well, it is nice to earn some money. It pays for the climbing.

FLORA: Climbing?

RICHIE: Yes, I’m in a climbing club.

FLORA: What, like mountains?

RICHIE: Well, no. Not yet. I’ve only been doing it for about three months. But someday, I hope, I’ll be able to climb some real mountains.

FLORA: So where do you go climbing then?

RICHIE: We use the climbing wall up at the North Gate Sports Centre. It’s really cool.

FLORA: Wow! I would love to try that.

RICHIE: Why don’t you come? It’s every Thursday from 7:00 to 8:00.

FLORA: Really? That would be so cool.

RICHIE: Yeah, why not? There’s a big group of us. We have loads of fun. You can bring friends along if you want.

FLORA: You know, I might just do that.

RICHIE: Anyway, what about this computer of yours?

FLORA: I’d almost forgotten! Yes, it keeps turning off and showing error code 324.

WOMAN: … and two months in Australia, too. So, yes, you know, I’ve been really lucky. I’ve seen a lot of different countries round the world in the last two or three years.

STUDENT 1: Which one did you like most?

WOMAN: Oh, that’s kind of hard to answer, but I certainly loved being in Japan.

STUDENT 2: Really? But aren’t the people there very cold and unfriendly?

WOMAN: Well, it’s strange, you know, because a lot of people in Europe seem to think that, but it’s just a kind of negative stereotype, really. I didn’t find it was true at all. Maybe I was just lucky, but I met a lot of Japanese people who were very funny – really warm and kind. I mean, they’re very, very polite – that’s really important in their culture – and so people bow a lot and things, but it’s really nice. I like people who are polite, so I got used to it very easily.

STUDENT 2: But life’s really different there, isn’t it?

WOMAN: Yes and no. I mean, sure, some things are different. Like, things happen on time! That was strange for me. It was hard to get used to that. You know, if the bus is supposed to arrive at 10.30, well, it arrives at 10.30. We aren’t used to buses arriving on time here, are we?

STUDENT 3: What about the food and things there? Isn’t it very different?

WOMAN: Sure. They eat some things that are strange for us. But, you know, don’t believe everything you hear. Japanese people don’t spend their lives eating only sushi and whale meat, you know. I loved the food. When I went there, though, I wasn’t very good with chopsticks. You know, I’m used to eating with a knife and fork at home, so when people saw me trying to use chopsticks, sometimes they laughed, but in such a nice way that I laughed too! And Japanese people helped me a lot and showed me how to do it, so that was cool. I’m pretty good with chopsticks now!

STUDENT 1: So people were nice, then?

WOMAN: Oh, sure. I mean, in every country I’ve been to, you know, people are different but, in the end, people are people and some of them are nice and some of them aren’t so nice. Some people are polite; some are rude. You just have to go to a country with an open mind. One thing I’ve learned, I think, is that sometimes we get an idea about a country or a group of people and then we start to think that everyone in that country is like that, and really, it’s a stereotype – it isn’t true. Billy Elliot is an 11-year-old boy who lives in the north of England. Billy's mother is dead, and he lives with his father and his brother, who are both coal miners.

Billy's father makes him take up boxing, but he hates it. One day, at the sports centre, Billy sees a group of girls doing ballet lessons and joins the class. But he doesn't tell his father, who believes that dancing is something that girls do, not boys. When Billy's father finds out about the ballet, he gets angry and he doesn't let his son take any more lessons. But Billy carries on in secret because he loves it.

Billy's ballet teacher, Georgia, encourages him to take a test to go to the Royal Ballet School in London. When she tells Billy's father, he says that Billy isn't allowed to dance any more. But then, one day, he sees Billy dancing. He realises that his son is talented, that it's his dream to go to the school in London and that he isn't going to give up dancing. After that, Billy's father does everything he can to help his son. He hasn't got any money, but other people in the town get the money together and then he takes Billy to London for the entrance test. Finally, Billy is accepted at the school and after years of study, he ends up as a top professional ballet dancer.

Jess Bhamra is the 18-year-old daughter of an Indian family in London. Jules Paxton is the same age and the daughter of an English family. Jess is crazy about football, but because she's a girl, she isn't allowed to play. Sometimes she plays in the park with some boys and one day, Jules, who also plays football, sees Jess playing. They get on really well and Jules invites Jess to try out for the local women's football team, coached by Joe. When he sees how good Jess is, Joe puts her in the team. When Jess's parents find out that she's been playing football without their knowing, they make her stop.

The team gets to an important final. Unfortunately, the final is on the same day as Jess's sister's wedding. Joe asks Mr Bhamra to let Jess play, but he refuses. Halfway through the wedding, Mr Bhamra lets Jess go. She rushes to the game.

When she shows up, there are only thirty minutes left and her team are losing 1–0. Soon, the score is 1–1, and when there's a free kick, Jess has to bend the ball around the other team's players to score. She makes it, and the team wins.

A university in California offers soccer scholarships to Jess and Jules. Jess finally convinces her parents to let her go. Jess and Jules set off for America and, later, they send a team photo to their families back home.
