Part 1
EXAMINER: Now I’d like you to talk about something for two minutes. I’d like you to imagine your school is planning to start a new after-school club. Here are some ideas for the kind of club they could start and a question to discuss. First you have some time to look at the task. Now, talk to each other about why students might want to go to these clubs.
TANYA: Umm. Let’s talk about the film making club. This is a good club for artistic people.
ALEXANDER: Yes, and it’s something different to other art clubs. Clubs for painting and drawing and that sort of thing.
TANYA: What about ‘Wonders of the Universe’ – that sounds interesting. Lots of people are interested in space now so this is a popular club.
ALEXANDER: It’s good for science-y people.
TANYA: Yes, and we don’t really learn very much about this in our school science lessons.
ALEXANDER: I don’t think archery is a good club. It’s a very dangerous sport.
TANYA: Oh. Umm. OK archery. I don’t think we are supposed to talk about what we like. The question says ‘why might students want to go to these clubs’.
ALEXANDER: Oh. I think people who like dangerous sports will like this.
TANYA: OK, what do you think about ‘Rock star’?
ALEXANDER: What is it?
TANYA: I think it’s a club for people who want to be in a band. It’s for them to meet and get together and start to make music.
ALEXANDER: So not for learning an instrument?
TANYA: Probably not. I think you need to play something already but this club will show you how to play with other people, umm write songs, umm perform on stage, that sort of thing I guess.
ALEXANDER: OK, and this one. Baking. I don’t like cooking.
TANYA: Yes, but lots of students do. I think it would be popular. Students would go to this club to learn about interesting things to cook and how to do it.
ALEXANDER: Yes, that’s a good idea.
Part 2
EXAMINER: Thank you. Now you have about a minute to decide which two clubs would be the most popular.
ALEXANDER: That’s easy. I want a film making club and the space one. Film making is good because people like films.
TANYA: That’s true – people like watching films but do they want to make them? I’m not sure.
ALEXANDER: What clubs would you choose?
TANYA: Well, I agree with you about the space club. I think that lots of students would want to learn more about this.
ALEXANDER: Me too. Let’s choose it.
TANYA: OK.
ALEXANDER: What is your second choice?
TANYA: Let’s see. Umm I don’t think Rock Stars would be so popular. Not many students play instruments so there’s a problem already.
ALEXANDER: Yes, and if you want to be in a band then probably you are already in a band.
TANYA: So we agree. Not Rock Stars. How about the baking club?
ALEXANDER: No. Boys don’t like cooking.
TANYA: What! Lots of boys like cooking.
ALEXANDER: My friends don’t like it.
TANYA: Well, OK. That leaves us with Archery.
ALEXANDER: Yes, people like sports. OK, archery and...
TANYA: Wonders of the Universe. Agreed.
ALEXANDER: Yes. Agreed.
