The Palio

A few weeks ago, I went to Siena, in the north of Italy to see a very special event called the Palio. There were 60,000 people there!

The Palio is a very old tradition in Siena. It started about 700 years ago, in the Middle Ages. So, what is the Palio exactly? Well, it's a horse race! Ten riders from ten different areas of the city compete in the race. Everyone supports the rider from their area of Siena.

This is Alberto. He's from the area of Lupa in Siena, like my grandparents. He and his horse, Zodiac, trained every day for a year for this race. The race is only 90 seconds, but it's not easy. The track is a difficult shape, and it's dangerous for the horses and the riders.

On the day of the race, there was a big parade. Lots of people celebrated the tradition of the Palio together. People dressed up in clothes from the Middle Ages and played traditional music.

The parade finished at the track in Siena's central square. Everybody was excited. We waited for the race to begin.

And then, they were off! The crowd shouted and the horses ran! They all ran very fast.

Then something terrible happened. One of the riders fell right in front of Alberto and Zodiac. So they fell, too. Everyone was okay. But in the end, Antonio Russo and his horse won. The people from his area ran onto the track and celebrated. They sang and carried their prize home. It was a banner – a symbol of their good luck.

You really must go to the Palio one day. It's a wonderful celebration and a great tradition!

The bowler

A lot of games are popular in India, but the number one sport is cricket! Like hockey, cricket started in England. It started 500 years ago.

Today, kids all over India love playing it. Their dream is to become a famous cricket player.

This is Fahimuddin. He's 22 years old. When he was a child, he played cricket with his six brothers. They still play together today, but now Fahimuddin wants to be a professional cricket player.

He's a bowler. In cricket, the bowler throws the ball to the player with the bat. Fahimuddin is a really good bowler. He's fast; he's strong; and he can throw the ball over 160 kilometres per hour!

But there's something else special about Fahimuddin. He's deaf. He can't hear. He uses sign language to communicate.

Fahimuddin and his coach are preparing for a very important match. Fahimuddin must play well today because this man is watching him. He finds new players for professional cricket teams.

Can Fahimuddin be a professional cricket player?

Extreme fishing

In Texas, in the United States, there's a river called Devils River.

“It's a good one here. Ready?”

It's called Devils River because the water is sometimes dangerous. It's a great place for kayaking and for fishing.

“Whoa!”

But you mustn't be afraid of the water here!

Now Eric is looking for more extreme fishing. In New York City? Well, the ocean is near New York City. First, Eric must wear the right clothes. A wetsuit …

“Perfect. How do I look?”

... and a six kilogram belt to help him stay under water. Eric also needs flippers to swim, a mask to see, a snorkel to breathe and a spear gun to catch fish.

“Yeah! I got a striped bass! Boom!”

For some really extreme fishing, Eric goes to San Diego, California. He and his friend go out on a boat to fish for sharks!

“Whoa.”

“Don't fall in!”

“Okay. Good idea, Dave.”

“You'll be dead.”

“Good idea.”

“Alright. He sees it. He's coming at it. Right out there. Here he comes.”

“He's turning for it. Hit ‘em. Yeah!”

“Keep that tension on him. He's the big one.”

“Oh, there he goes. This is it. The excitement.”

The shark tries to escape, but he can't.

"Oh man!”

The shark is very strong. It takes Eric 30 minutes to catch it.

“Yeah, I got him. I got him.”

“Nice!”

“That is a BIG shark.”

“Yeah!”

It's a beautiful shark, about one and a half metres long. But they don't want to eat it, so they put it back in the water.

“And off he goes.”

“There he goes!”

Now, that's extreme fishing!

The Highland Games

Are you bored with modern sports? Then come to the Highland Games in Scotland and discover traditional Scottish sports. The Games celebrate Scottish culture, and also include Scottish dance competitions and typical local food.

From May to September there are Highland Games in towns and villages across Scotland. Men, women and children travel from all over the world to watch.

Nobody knows when the Games started. But in the 11th century, King Malcolm III of Scotland held a race to find a fast runner to take his messages. Maybe this was the first Highland Games. Some historians say that the Victorians invented the Games in the 19th century.

Competitors at the Games do a lot of different events. There are special 'heavy' athletic sports. One famous event is the caber toss. A caber is a heavy wooden pole. Contestants throw the caber. The winners are very strong! Other events are the stone put – contestants throw a big stone; and the hammer throw – they throw a metal ball on a long stick. Another popular event is the 'Tug o' war'. In this event rival teams pull a rope in opposite directions!

Local Scottish athletes wear traditional tartan kilts similar to skirts. Tartan is a colourful material. In the past, Scottish people wore tartan to show which family they were from.

Nowadays, people from all round the world compete in the events. So why don't you come too and experience the magic of the Highland Games?

FACT! There are Highland games all round the world. The first Highland games in the USA took place in New York in 1836.

OK, class, for the outdoor sports and activities school trip there are some special clothes and equipment you need to take. Can you listen and make a list please? Outdoor sports and activities can be dangerous, so you must protect yourselves. You must have a helmet like this one. A helmet is a hard hat and it protects your head in lots of different sports like mountain biking, canoeing and climbing – so, very important. Right, two more things you must take are goggles to protect your eyes, and gloves to protect your hands. You need goggles and gloves for snow sports like skiing and snowboarding, so don't forget those. Next thing on the list is special clothes for water sports. For those students who want to go surfing or windsurfing, you must take a wetsuit. A wetsuit is like a big swimming costume that covers your whole body and it keeps you warm in the cold water. Does anyone want to go canoeing? OK, a few of you, well, you must take waterproof clothes to keep the water out. When we go canoeing, we also wear a life jacket to keep us safe if we fall in the water. But don't worry; you don't need to take a life jacket. There are life jackets for all students at the activity centre. OK, that's it. Any questions?

Outdoor sports and activities

We often do sports and activities at a gym or a sports centre, but sometimes we do them outdoors, in a natural environment. Outdoor sports and activities are sometimes competitive. This means that we do them in a race or a competition because we want to win a prize. Recreational means that we do them because they are fun.

We usually do outdoor sports and activities in three different places: on land, in the air or in the water. Horse-riding, mountain biking and climbing are land activities. We often go climbing on mountains or large rocks. Bungee jumping, parachuting and paragliding are air activities. We jump from a high place like a bridge when we do bungee jumping. Canoeing, waterskiing and windsurfing are water activities. We go canoeing in rivers and waterskiing and windsurfing in the sea.

From May to September there are Highland Games in towns and villages across Scotland. Men, women and children travel from all over the world to watch.

Kilian Jornet was born in Sabadell in 1987. He does the extreme sport of skyrunning: running up and down mountains. watched her father kitesurf and wanted to do it too, but her parents said it was dangerous, so she didn't start until she was eight. At nine she turned professional and at ten she was world champion. After that the family went to live in the south of Spain. Gisela trained and studied there and went to kitesurfing competitions all over the world. In 2012 she won her eighth world title, started university and opened a kitesurf school.

Kilian Jornet was born in Sabadell in 1987. He does the extreme sport of skyrunning: running up and down mountains. His dad is a mountain guide and his mum is a mountain sports teacher, so Kilian learnt to ski when he was one! At six he climbed a 4,000 m mountain, and he started ski training when he was 13.
