Food Facts or Food Fiction?

In Japan, square watermelons are very popular. People often buy them as presents. But these special fruits are of course very expensive. Round watermelons do not cost so much.

People all over the world love bananas. Food experts say that bananas contain a chemical that helps the body to produce serotonin. It's sometimes called the body's own ‘happiness hormone'.

People in Iceland love eating unusual ice creams. There is pizza ice cream, sausage ice cream and even fish and chips ice cream, and they are all very popular. People eat them with a lot of ketchup. But you don't find any lemon or mango ice creams there. Icelanders just don't like them.

Honey is very healthy. It has got lots of vitamins. Some people say that honey makes us beautiful. They think it's good for the hair and the skin. Honey is also very special because it is the only food we eat that never goes off. We can eat 3,000- or 4,000-year-old honey!

The avocado is a fruit, not a vegetable. It comes from Central and South America originally, but now it also grows in other hot countries. Many people like avocados as a starter before their main meal. But how many people eat it as a dessert? Well, in Brazil, people eat avocado with ice cream and milk.

People in West Africa use a ‘potato-clock' to tell the time. Every morning, they put exactly 7.5 kilos of potatoes in the clock. It looks like a big pot. They put it on the fire. They know that it takes two hours to cook the potatoes.

Everybody knows that fruit has got sugar in it. But how much sugar is there in a lemon? A lot. More than there is in a strawberry!

Not a good day. My older brother Jeremy is cooking tonight. 'What's the problem?' I can hear you saying. Well, the problem is that you don't know my brother. You don't know how he cooks. And you don't know that every Friday is a nightmare for me because my parents go to their dance class. When they come back we all sit down and Jeremy starts serving what he calls 'another surprise meal'. Jeremy isn't a bad cook. He's a catastrophe!

First of all he always cooks too many things, like fish, steak, boiled ham, roast chicken and sausages. All on one plate! That's too much food for a week! How can one person eat all that in one meal? Mum and Dad don't say a word, of course. They're too polite. And they don't want to give up their dance classes.

Spaghetti tonight. When Jeremy says 'spaghetti' he doesn't say it. He sings it (he loves cooking spaghetti, well, he loves cooking anything!). But that doesn't make a difference. It tastes terrible. There isn't enough tomato sauce on it. There's too much pasta. And there's too much salt. Yuck! Another one of my brother's favourites is vegetable soup. It's always too spicy, and there are never enough vegetables in it. And he puts in little pieces of fish, steak, ham, chicken and sausages. You can guess where they're from. It's the left-overs from the week before.

My brother's desserts aren't bad. He gets them at the supermarket. It's usually ice cream with strawberries or chocolate mousse with mango. But, of course, there are never enough strawberries and there's never enough ice

cream. I want to talk to Mum and Dad today. I want them to give up dancing. It's not healthy. You know what I mean. It's unhealthy for me when they go dancing every Friday.

It is fantastic to go to different countries. You can see wonderful places and visit great cities. You can go to museums and markets, and meet people with different ideas and a different language. And, of course, you can eat different food, too.

Sometimes the food in another country is different because it has a different taste – for example, food in India is often very spicy. But sometimes it is because the food itself is very different. So, what things do people eat in other countries that perhaps you don't eat in yours?

Well, in Mexico, some people really like to eat grasshoppers. Do you think that's strange? Perhaps, but of course the people who eat grasshoppers don't think so, and in fact grasshoppers are very good for you.

If you go to South Africa, you see that some places serve kudu – it's a kind of big antelope. And in some parts of the USA, you can eat rattlesnake – some people say it tastes like chicken, but other people say it's like fish. A lot of people just say: 'It's delicious!'

Talking of chicken, grilled chicken hearts are a big favourite in Brazil. People eat them with meat and rice at barbecues. Finally, if you go to a restaurant in some parts of Peru, it's possible that you will see fried guinea pig on the menu. It's a very important food for many people in the mountain parts of the country.

So perhaps you are thinking: 'Oh, no, please – I just want to eat chips!' Oh, yes, chips (or 'fries' in the USA). Now they're the same in every country, right? Wrong! In many places in Britain, people eat their chips with a curry

sauce!

So, when you eat a meal, stop and think. Perhaps people from other countries think that your food is really strange!
