OLIVIA: Well done, Luke! You know Megan's a really big fan of Gregory Harris.

LUKE: Well, it's her own fault. I mean, she got the time wrong.

RYAN: True, but a little sympathy wouldn't hurt. You know, if you want to get on with people.

Scene 2

MAN: Hi. Can I get a latte please?

MAN: Thank you.

MEGAN: Excuse me.

MAN: Yes?

MEGAN: Sorry to bother you – but, you're not from around here, are you?

MAN: You guessed it! No, I'm not from around here. I'm not even from Britain!

MEGAN: So, are you on holiday then?

MAN: No, working I'm afraid! We're making a movie here, and I'm in the town to check things out. We start filming next week.

MEGAN: A movie? The one with Gregory Harris?

MAN: That's right. I'm the director. Tony Gorman.

MEGAN: Oh, yes! I've seen you on TV! You go to all the big Hollywood movie premieres and get all kinds of awards and things!

MAN: Yeah, well, just one award so far, but I'm trying! It's nice to see you laughing.

MEGAN: Sorry?

MAN: Well, when I came in just now, you really didn't look very happy.

MEGAN: No, well. The thing is …

MAN: Yes?

MEGAN: Well, I really, really wanted to be an extra in your film but I got the time wrong and I got to the auditions too late, and I was SO upset because I wanted so much to be in a film with Gregory Harris because I'm a HUGE fan of his. Sorry – I'm being stupid.

MAN: No, relax. Look, can I get you something else to drink?

MEGAN: Oh, thanks. Yes, a lemonade would be great. But excuse me for a minute.

MAN: OK. I'll get it for you.

MAN: Hi, again. A lemonade, please.

MAN: Hi. It's me. Listen, could you do me a favour? Do you have half an hour?

MAN: Oh, hey! Come in, sit down. I'll get you some coffee. Oh, and this is Megan.

GREGORY HARRIS: Hi Megan.

SANDRA: Well, I'm glad you asked me that! It's, well, it's a kind of a mystery movie, I guess. Or horror? I don't know. It starts in a school classroom – I used my school of course, and lots of my friends were sitting around. And the two actors are sitting talking to each other and they start saying how everything is really boring, you know? And another guy is watching them and listening to them, and then he gets up and walks down a corridor into a dark room. And in there, we see him pull a big, black handle – and everything goes into black-and-white! And everyone at the school is surprised and they think it's terrible but they don't know what's happened. So the film is about how everyone really, really wants to get the colour back into their lives. In the end, everything does go back to colour. And the couple in the film are in the same place, but now they see it with different eyes.

HOST: Sounds very interesting! Thanks again, Sandra, and congratulations on your film and your prize!

SANDRA: I'm going to use it to buy some equipment for my next film, I hope.

HOST: Next film? So you're planning to do another one?

SANDRA: Sure. I mean, my plan is to be a film director, that's what I want to do as my career.

HOST: Hollywood?

SANDRA: No, no – I want to do my own things, independently, that's a lot more interesting I think.

HOST: Great. And so, tell me, how do you go about making a short movie, a home-made movie – because your film was 100% home-made, right?

SANDRA: Yeah. Well, I mean, you have to get an idea first, right? And then you have to get some equipment, and you need your friends to be in the film, to be the actors.

HOST: How do you choose the actors?

SANDRA: Well, in my case I chose a friend who had some film equipment, like a really good expensive digital camera, so he was in the film straightaway. No problem!

HOST: That's like the kid who's got a football is always picked for the team.

SANDRA: Exactly. But in fact he's not a bad actor. And the other one, the other actor in my film, was a friend who's already done some acting at school, so I know she's really good.

HOST: Only two actors then?

SANDRA: Yeah, well there were one or two extras, just friends who didn't need to say anything.

HOST: What about the script? The story?

SANDRA: Yeah, well I wrote the story on my computer of course, and I got another friend to look through it and make it better. In fact, she made the script much better. And the thing is, of course, it's a short movie and you don't want it to be expensive or complicated, right? So you need a story that doesn't involve too many people or places – or money!

HOST: And then …? You go and do the filming, and then it's ready?

SANDRA: Well, no … you have to edit the film. I mean, we had about two hours of film and the competition was for a 15-minute film, so I had to edit it, make it shorter, take out some of the things that didn't look too good or weren't really necessary for the final film.

HOST: You did that yourself?

SANDRA: Yes, I used a program on my laptop, you don't need special stuff.

HOST: No special program?

SANDRA: No, you see, a lot of people think you need all kinds of special, expensive equipment to make a film, and you don't. In fact the one thing you really need is just, well, you need to really want to make a film and you need to kind of see it in your head. If you can see it in your head, then you can make it.

HOST: Excellent. Well, just one more question, Sandra – what was your film about?

JOANNE: My favourite hobby is, well, I really love going swimming. I don't swim every day, but even on the days I don't go swimming, I usually go to the sports centre. I enjoy that because there are always some friends there, and things to do, you know?

MAREK: I spend a lot of time writing my blog – I'm really into that. In fact, I maybe spend too much time on the computer because my other big thing is films. I download them on the computer and watch them. I spend hours doing that!

ALESSANDRA: Well, one of my favourite things is going out on my bike. I really love taking my bike out and going riding for hours. And then there's the theatre. Lots of my friends like the cinema but I've always preferred the theatre. It's just a great atmosphere, I love it.

JORGE: For me, friends are the most important thing, so I love phoning them or just being with them after school and in the shopping centre at the weekend – you know, just chatting, talking. And my other love is the violin. I'm still learning and I'm not very good yet, but I want to play the violin really well one day.

He works in a small shop on the corner of the street and he always gets things wrong. He makes lots of mistakes, but the customers don't mind because he's such a nice guy. He makes people smile … erm … that's why I like him so much.

Do you need millions of dollars to make a movie? No. Do you need millions of dollars to make a successful movie? Most people would answer 'Yes' to that question. But would they be right?

Big movies on a small budget

We're used to hearing about really expensive Hollywood films. The 1997 Oscar-winner Titanic cost $200 million to make, and more recently, Spider Man 3, one of the most successful films of 2007, had a budget of more than $250 million.

To be successful, however, a film doesn't need to be as expensive as the big Hollywood blockbusters. An example of this is the 2010 movie Monsters, which cost less than half a million dollars to make. Monsters is set in Mexico and is the story of two people trying to escape from aliens and get back to the USA. The film won several awards and got very good reviews from many film critics – for example, the website Moviefone put Monsters at number 3 in its list of the best sci-fi films for 2010.

How did they make the film so cheaply? First of all, it only took three weeks to film, and the film crew was just seven people in a van. Secondly, the man who

made the film, Gareth Edwards, decided to film it with digital video, which is cheaper than the usual 35mm film. (The film equipment cost only $15,000 altogether.) There is also the fact that they used real locations, not a studio. And the cast of the film were Edwards himself and two friends of his – all the extras in the film were people who were just there, and they weren't paid.

Most importantly, Edwards did most of the production work himself. He spent eight months editing Monsters and then five months creating the special effects. And he did it all at home on his computer, using non-professional software. The amazing thing is that the final film looks nearly as professional as big, fancy Hollywood productions.

Not everybody liked Monsters, of course. One person said: 'That's 90 minutes of my life that I'll never get back.' But overall, it was very well received. And at least it wasn't expensive to make.

Do you need millions of dollars to make a movie? No. Do you need millions of dollars to make a successful movie? Most people would answer 'Yes' to that question. But would they be right?

How did they make the film so cheaply? First of all, it only took three weeks to film, and the film crew was just seven people in a van. Secondly, the man who made the film, Gareth Edwards, decided to film it with digital video, which is cheaper than the usual 35mm film. (The film equipment cost only $15,000 altogether.) There is also the fact that they used real locations, not a studio. And the cast of the film were

To be successful, however, a film doesn't need to be as expensive as the big Hollywood blockbusters. An example of this is the 2010 movie Monsters, which cost less than half a million dollars to make. Monsters is set in Mexico and is the story of two people trying to escape from aliens and get back to the USA. The film won several awards and got very good reviews from many film critics – for example, the website Moviefone put Monsters at number 3 in its list of the best sci-fi films for 2010.

Edwards himself and two friends of his – all the extras in the film were people who were just there, and they weren't paid.

Not everybody liked Monsters, of course. One person said: 'That's 90 minutes of my life that I'll never get back.' But overall, it was very well received. And at least it wasn't expensive to make.

John Carter (2012) – This Walt Disney epic cost around $300 million dollars. Unfortunately, neither critics nor audiences really liked it.

Pirates of the Caribbean – At World's End (2007) – This third film in the pirate story cost almost $300 million, but made more than three times that around the world.

Love it or hate it, television is a part of our lives. Parents use it as a babysitter for their children, teenagers watch it so they can discuss it with their friends at school and many old people depend on it for company. We all watch it, but are we really just wasting our time?

Personally, I don't think we can say that watching TV is always a waste of time. Of course, it's very easy to waste a lot of time watching it, time that we could use for doing more useful things. In my opinion, if we plan what we watch and keep control over how much we watch, sensible TV viewing can be an important part of our lives.

When you do a listening activity in class, it's a good idea to do some reading and thinking before you listen, to get yourself ready. Here are some ideas.

Listening can be challenging. A little work before you listen can help you a lot and make you more confident when you start listening.

Read the task carefully. Are you sure you know what you have to do?

Read the list of things carefully. Perhaps say the words to yourself in your head (or aloud if you aren't in class) and picture the things in your mind.

It can be a good idea to underline the important words (for example, go to the theatre). Listen for these words when you listen to the recording.

Sometimes the words in the task aren't exactly the same as the words you're going to hear. Is there another way you can say, for example, go cycling or go to the cinema? Try to think of words that are associated with the things written in the task.
